We Will Always Love You
The afternoon before Music’s Greatest night, one of the most prolific artists left us…
Whitney Houston
News of the singer, songwriter, mother and inspirational figure sent shock waves around our industry. The Newark-Born actress wasn’t just another “artist.” For many today, Houston served as their role model. Yes, her later years were filled with controversy. Was she an addict? Was she cleaning up her act? Will she…. can she return to her former glory? Regardless of her personal affairs, the public still cheered for her. Her fans held hope. People waited for her return.
Houston’s return to the headlines wasn’t about a new album. It wasn’t about a public display of what some say were drug-induced tantrums… Hours before she was scheduled to appear at
Clive Davis’ Annual Grammy party, a headline from her publicist stating that she had passed took over Social Media, News Feeds and headlines around the globe… And with that, one of the greatest that I ever loved, had passed.
Personally, her version of “You Light Up My Life” meant the world to me as it played at my best friend’s funeral 13 years ago.
By far she had the most memorable Super Bowl National Anthem performances.
I Have Nothing is in my Top 10 Slow Jams of ALL TIME.
The Bodyguard is forever memorable because it brings back a great memory of my mother & I going to the theater together to watch Whitney shine.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody… NOT the remix. NOT the Mashup. NOT a Bootlegged version… THE ORIGINAL song remains a staple during my prime time sets… and if you’re a DJ and not playing it… you really miss out on seeing a sea of women throw their hands up in a diva-ish manner as the song sparks that “good memory” of Whitney in their lives.
For billions around the world, we KNEW Houston before her battles with drugs. We knew how great she could be… The sad part is for a lot of people out there, they have no idea who Whitney is outside of her appearances on network television and movies. So for those involved with music and programming, I urge that we re-educate the masses as to how great of an artist she was/is.
Last night’s Grammy Award Celebration was an emotional one. Leading up to the show I wondered, how will they honor her properly? How can they choose any artist to cover Whitney?
They did it right… Houston’s biggest song I Will Always Love You was covered by Jennifer Hudston… and it didn’t disappoint.
