Family Ties
Spruill was raised by her maternal grandparents, who she thought were her parents until she was nine years old. After the death of her grandfather, she learned that he was not her father, as she had been led to believe. She also learned that a now-deceased ‘family friend’, Christine, who had sometimes visited when Valerie was a child, was her real mother.
Christine was a prostitute. She had started seeing the man who was to become Valerie’s father when he was just fifteen, and the two had at least seven children together, though the exact number is unknown.

Later on in life, Valerie met and fell in love with a man named Percy Spruill. The two had a happy life, and three children, together until he died in 1998. Percy, by the way, was fifteen years her senior.
If you’ve been following carefully (or read the headline), you know where this is going.
Shortly after Percy’s death, Spruill’s uncle told her the truth:
Her late husband was also her late father.
Spruill used some of Percy’s hair to do a DNA test, which confirmed what her uncle had told her. Although Spruill is not 100% sure that her husband knew the truth, she suspects that he did, and didn’t tell her because of the ‘taboo’.
Spruill has 3 children of which she is the mother and half sister to.
