The Jersey Shore can’t catch a break.
A raging fire propelled by powerful winds destroyed a massive swath of the famed Seaside Park boardwalk Thursday, nearly a year after it was leveled by Hurricane Sandy.
The fast-moving flames ravaged more than 80% of the popular boardwalk — gutting all 32 businesses and spewing fist-sized embers into the air, authorities said. No injuries were reported.
“This is like a sucker punch,” Seaside Park Business Administrator Robert Martucci told the Daily News.
“An unbelievable effort was made so that this town can come back. But for this to happen now is just inconceivable.”
The six-alarm blaze, fanned by winds topping 30 mph, quickly spread north to the boardwalk in neighboring Seaside Heights.
The fire, sparked inside a Kohr’s Ice Cream stand about 2:15 p.m., was still raging into the night.
More than 400 firefighters rushed to the scene and drew water from nearby Barnegat Bay to battle the flames.
But the fire marched on, prompting firefighters to rip up part of the boardwalk and dig a 20-foot trench in a frantic bid to stop the blaze’s advance.
“I feel like I want to throw up,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said as he raced to the scene.
At a hastily convened news conference, Christie had a specific message: Stay away.
“Do not come here,” Christie said. “We are still trying to bring more fire equipment in here. . . . We need to have easy access to this area of the boardwalk.”
Throngs of Jersey Shore residents stared in stunned silence as the fire devoured the boardwalk and people’s livelihoods.
“I’ve been coming here for my whole life,” said Casey Ciraolo, 31, of nearby Toms River. “It’s like getting kicked when you’re down. It’s almost like a flashback, but instead of a storm, it’s a fire.”
Several networks are planning tributes to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Though the observances have become more muted over time — this was most apparent in the eleventh anniversary’s coverage, especially following the tenth anniversary memorials — most networks still have at least a moment of silence planned on Wednesday morning.
Al Jazeera America’s Del Walters will cover the day’s memorial events from New York City from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. ET.
ABC plans to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. ET, the time that the first hijacked flight hit the Twin Towers, during “Good Morning America,” as it has done in previous years.
CBS will cover the anniversary as part of its regularly scheduled broadcasts.

A nine-day traffic jam in China is now more than 100 kilometres long and could last for weeks, state media reported Monday.
Thousands of trucks en route to Beijing from Huai’an in the southeast have been backed up since Aug. 14, making the National Expressway 100 impassable, Xinhua News reported.
A spokesman for the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau reportedly told China’s Global Times newspaper that the backup was due to “insufficient traffic capacity … caused by maintenance construction.”
The construction is scheduled to last until Sept. 13.
Stranded drivers appear to have few options when it comes to dealing with the jam.
At least some drivers have complained that roadside vendors have increased their prices to take advantage of the traffic jam. One truck driver said he bought instant noodles from one vendor for four times the original price.
Another driver, Wang, told Xinhua he’d been stuck in the traffic jam for three days and two nights.
“We are advised to take detours, but I would rather stay here since I will travel more distance and increase my costs,” Wang said.
This is not the first time the highway has faced such congestion.
A similar backup in July kept traffic to a crawl for nearly a month, Xinhua reported.
