(video) John Oliver Explains the Student Debt Crisis & For Profit College Issue
For Profit Schools Stealing Your Money
Last year we touched on the fact Some For Profit Colleges are built on the fact that they’re literally robbing you.
It’s 100% illegal to take in a government student loan and be paid out for it. The fact that certain for profit schools
of which we will not name for legal ramifications are still doing it is bothersome.
How you might ask?
Let’s say you speak with an “academic admissions” specialist with one of the for profit schools. Chances are, he or she is fresh out of college themselves. The For Profit College preys on their innocence and teaches them that what they’re doing is ethical and moral.
But here’s the skinny on it.
After being “accepted” to your program, your loan company cuts a check to the school.
That school in turn will pay out the admissions person IN the form of a CASH BONUS for recruiting you.
What’s even worse is most people who truly are trying to better themselves are getting what’s considered a second rate education at nearly 5 times the cost of a community college or double that of an accredited university. Check out John Oliver’s take on student debt and For Profit Colleges
US Citizens Can Now Travel to Cuba
Habanas in Havana
All Americans can now travel legally to Cuba — with some limitations.
The longstanding ban on Cuba travel has been amended to allow all Americans to take part in tours to Cuba that encourage “people to people” contact. Previously, only religious, educational, and cultural groups could legally travel to Cuba, and then only with specific permission from the U.S. State Department.
The bad news is that Americans still can’t simply book a flight and a hotel and head to Cuba. You’ll need to travel with a Cuba travel organization that has an official license from the U.S. State Department, like Insight Cuba and Central Holidays.
And, while your tour may include stops at museums, historic sites, or even the Bay of Pigs or a local Communist Party block meeting, purely recreational activities — like visiting the beach or scuba diving — are prohibited from tour itineraries, which are limited to experiences that brings American and Cuban people together.
Schedules are typically packed with activities in order to comply with the State Department’s mandate and federal law.
nsight Cuba is offering several options for Cuba travel, including a three-night weekend in Havana and seven-night trips that see more of the country. Tour prices include all lodging, activities, in-country transportation and meals, but not the cost of the necessary charter flight from Miami to Havana.
Other tour operators, including Abercrombie & Kent, have also applied for State Department approval to begin tours of Cuba for Americans.

(video) John Oliver Reveals the SAD Truth About Payday Loans
F*** You, Pay Me
Most people have seen former talk show host Montel Williams speak about getting cash in advance of your pay check.
On his Weekly Show Last Week Tonight, Comedian John Oliver reveals the sad truth about payday loans. Some loans can receive APR’s of 700% of the original loan!
Actual Ace Loan Training Circle
The sad truth is that most Americans that opt for payday loans do not pay them back within the given time frame.
Then, the collection phone calls and borderline harassment begins.
Most Payday loan collection agencies utilize bullying as a form to receive payment.
They threaten the borrowers with statements like: “you’re going to jail” or “you’ll lose your license” and they’ll even contact everyone that you’re linked to in a google search!
When the chairman of the finance commission for Texas is ALSO a VP of one of the biggest payday loan companies, you know there’s a problem!
This is a must watch!
Crumbs Cupcakes Closes Up Shop
Closing Crumbs
– via the Washington Post –
And now a moment of silence for a fallen cupcakery — a prayer for the Red Velvet Cheesecakes that will never be made, a paean to the empty calories that will never be consumed. Crumbs Bake Shop, a national chain based in New York with outlets in 10 cities including the Washington area, closed the doors of all of its stores Monday after a cursory announcement, the Wall Street Journal reported.
“Regrettably Crumbs has been forced to cease operations and is immediately attending to the dislocation of its devoted employees while it evaluates its limited remaining options,” the company said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. Those options could include a bankruptcy filing, the spokeswoman said.
The scene in New York was reminiscent of bankers carrying boxes out of Bear Stearns after its 2008 collapse. The Journal: “I come into work today, I’m happy, I’m skipping to work, and suddenly I don’t have a job,” said Kareem Wegman, who has worked at the store for two years and said he has a family to support. The New York Daily News: “I honestly do not know what’s going to happen. All I know is we’re open right now, and the store is full so I can’t talk long,” said one worker at Crumbs on 72nd St. The New York Post: “It’s a real curveball for us,” said a manager at the Crumbs in Brooklyn Heights. “Normally, you get two weeks’ notice when you’re closing down — you don’t get one-day notice.” When it went public in 2011, Crumbs seemed to have it all. Entree into the market too big to be cornered by Magnolia’s. Cupcake momentum fueled by “Sex and the City” and “Saturday Night Live.” And big, big cupcakes. Then came ignominy. Balance sheets that ran red. (It lost $18.2 million last year, the Journal said.) A NASDAQ delisting. “Substantial doubt as to Crumbs’ ability to continue as a going concern.” In one day, 48 locations to zero. Why did Crumbs fail? Maybe it expanded too quickly. Should a mom-and-pop pastry shop founded on the Upper West Side in 2003 be competing with the many Starbucks on and around K Street in Washington, D.C.? Maybe it caught a trend too late. Now we want cronuts. Maybe it was the decor. The very successful Georgetown Cupcake proffers its sweets at a cheery shop with pink-painted walls and pretty window displays, where cupcakes beckon from artfully arranged tiered trays. Crumbs, on the other hand, hawked goods at train stations and in generic shops with plain walls and fluorescent lights reflecting off of cases of cupcakes parked in rows. Not cute. Not fun. Unlike Georgetown, not TV ready. Or maybe the cupcakes were too darn big. Let’s speak plainly: The size was a problem.
