“A billion thanks. 25 times over,” reads an announcement on the site. “The App Store has reached 25 billion downloads. Thanks for getting us there.”
As for which lucky App Store downloader won the big prize for tapping “install,” Apple is asking interested parties to visit the official “25 billion app countdown” site at a later date to see who will be taking home the $10,000 App Store gift card. Apple will undoubtedly detail which app was the 25 billionth download at that time as well, which could lead to a bit of a boost for the lucky developer.
Apple’s 10 billionth app download, Paper Glider, was already a fairly well-known app prior to achieving its little place in Apple App Store history.
“Whilst app downloads of Paper Glider might not have experienced a huge shift after Apple’s announcement, [Neon Play Managing Director Oli Christie] could not have imagined the response from the media and from potential clients,” wrote The Next Web’s Matt Brian in January of last year. “Within two days of the announcement, Neon Play received numerous enquiries from digital marketing agencies and has already undertaken at least three projects as a result.”
According to Gartner, Apple jumped up to take third in overall worldwide phone sales in 2011, nearly doubling its market share from 2.9 percent in 2010 to 5.0 percent in 2011. Drilling down to smartphones, Apple was number one with a bullet by achieving a total smartphone market share of 19 percent.
A report by Telenav, released in August of last year, indicated that iPhone users were twice as likely as Android users to spend more than $40 total on apps for their smartphones. And only 45 percent of iPhone owners – versus 62 percent of Android owners and 63 percent of Blackberry owners – said they have never paid more than $1 for any app.
Data pulled between July and December of 2010 by Appsfire indicates that iPhone users use apps for a median of 84 minutes per day. And on their iPhones sit a median of 108 apps in total: 20 that come preinstalled with the iPhone and 88 that users download from the App Store. A separate report released by Asymco in 2011 puts the total number of apps downloaded per user at 60 (at the time). But the more intriguing number is this statistic’s growth rate: It’s not shrinking by any means.

Nick Cannon is finally on the mend after suffering from both kidney failure and blood clots during the past few months, AOL Music reports. For many, the stars health woes came as quite the surprise. Besides appearing physically fit, Cannon is only 31 years old, with no history of these types of ailments.
So what triggered Nick’s recent health scares? According to Cannon, an undiagnosed condition similar to Lupus. In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine, the star reveals his kidney failure was a result of an “autoimmune disease that [doctors] found in my system.” Subsequently, the blood clots that formed were directly connected to his kidney infection.
“It’s a lot of stuff,” Cannon tells PEOPLE. “But it’s all in order now. They kind of say [my] autoimmune [disease] is … like a Lupus type of thing, but no one else in my family has it.”
For Cannon, discovering the root of his health problems is the final key to changing his life. Now, Nick is focused on the well-being of his body, mind and soul. “The blood clot thing was probably the scariest because … I’ve known people who have passed away from that,” he says. “I’m just trying to make sure I put my health first.”
Despite the fact that Cannon’s new condition is “something I’m going to be living with all my life,” the star is focusing on the positive. “I feel blessed to be alive,” Nick shares. “If it wasn’t discovered, I don’t know [what would have happened].”

With more than 32 million songs from the Fox series digitally downloaded in the U.S., the cast of Glee has become the No. 8 digital artist of all time, according to SoundScan data provided by the label, joining the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and The Black Eyed Peas, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
“There has never been anything like Glee,” Columbia Records soundtrack executive Glen Brunman said of the series, which is halfway through its third season. “The idea that 58 episodes of a television show can generate sales of 32 million downloads is simply staggering. We are deeply indebted to the artists and songwriters whose music inspires us all.”
In addition, the Glee cast — which includes Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Cory Monteith, Darren Criss and Amber Riley, among others — continued to build on its record for most entries on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart; with 193 and counting, it has long surpassed Elvis Presley, The Beatles and James Brown.
Added to the series’ Hot 100 record is a Riley-fronted cover of Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” which sold nearly 45,300 tracks after it aired mere days after Houston’s Feb. 11 death. Joining the Riley rendition are covers of “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal” from Glee’s Michael Jackson tribute episode; both also proved to be big sellers for the series, with more than 48,700 and 161,400 downloads, respectively.
For its part, Glee has sold more than 42 million songs and more than 12 million albums worldwide. The series has scored three consecutive No. 1 releases with soundtracks Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers; Glee: The Music, The Power of Madonna; and Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals.
The series has two platinum albums (sales of more than 1 million) with Glee: The Music, Volume 1 and Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album, as well as three gold (500,000) albums with Glee: The Music, Volumes 2, 3 and 4, with the latter picking up a Grammy nomination for best compilation soundtrack for visual media.
The series, co-created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, celebrated its 300th musical performance — a mash-up of Adele’s “Rumor Has It”/”Someone Like You” — in October. The song topped the iTunes singles chart the morning after it aired as part of Glee’s Nov. 15 episode.
Glee returns with its spring premiere on Tuesday, April 10 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
